Tip #7: Create a Monologue from Life

Sometimes the best inspiration for your acting can come from the everyday lives of those around you. This exercise helps you sharpen your observational skills, spark your creativity, and develop original material that’s uniquely your own.

How to Do It

  1. Choose Your Subject: When you’re out and about, take a moment to safely observe a stranger from a respectful distance. Never follow or invade their privacy—this exercise is purely about imagination.

  2. Build Their Story: Based on their appearance, posture, and behaviour, invent a backstory for this person. Who are they? Where are they going? What challenges are they facing? Let your creativity run wild and imagine their world.

  3. Turn It Into a Monologue: Take the backstory you’ve created and write a short monologue in their voice. Think about their emotions, objectives, and what they might reveal in a private moment. Use this opportunity to experiment with tone, style, and character depth.
