Self Sabotage as Survival
You have an audition on Wednesday evening at 5pm. You start learning the lines on Wednesday morning, don’t really remember them, bodge the audition, cover nicely, shake hands with the director and never hear from them again.
You tell yourself that you didn’t really want it anyway, it wasn’t your kind of play, the director was nice but has a bit of a reputation.
And so you have self-sabotaged yourself out of another job. You didn’t prepare, so you can easily let yourself off the hook when you don’t get it.
That’s self-sabotage as a way of protecting yourself, because you can’t fail if you don’t really try.
I don’t blame you, we often act out of a fear of failure. But if you want to succeed, if you really want to make the most of your ability, you must commit to it, to proper preparation. Then if you fail, you can feel proud that you did all you could do.
