What if I’m on the wrong drama course?

Sometimes we end up at our destination only to find it isn’t what we expected. We thought we knew where we were going but once we arrive, it isn’t how we imagined it at all.

This happened to me. I was an undergraduate on a great Drama and Theatre degree course, but the lecturers seemed to have an unhealthy disdain for acting and actors, and only combined honours students could study acting as a subject. Within the first few weeks, I wanted to leave.

But then you make friends, and you meet boys and girls and before you know it,  you see out a course you don’t love because it’s easier to stay than it is to go.

But I can tell you that I wish I’d gone.

Finding yourself on the wrong course happens to a lot of people. You arrive at uni to study drama and theatre and its not just ‘academic’, it’s fully non-practical. You try to augment it with drama society, but it’s not the same. You wanted to act, and most of the time you’re discussing post war German expressionistic dance theatre or Semiotics. And the practical elements don’t feel like skills training, but you’re so grateful for a bit of practical that you do it anyway.

If you’re on the wrong course, it isn’t too late. You can still change.  Don’t get stuck somewhere you don’t want to be. Do what you love! You only get one shot.

Make it count.
