We’re Not For Everyone
Our way of working at ACS is not for everyone. We understand that. Horses for courses they say, and we couldn’t agree more. ACS isn’t for everyone.
Lazy people won’t enjoy our courses, we expect people to work – and work hard when they are in class and to prepare for class – analysing scenes, learning lines, meeting up with scene parters to practice. We like hard work and hard work isn’t for everyone.
People that only want to protect their ‘talent’ will not enjoy ACS. ACS is a studio committed to developing people’s abilities and if you are the kind of person that just wants to hear about how good they already are – you won’t enjoy ACS, we want to make you better than ever, not help you ossify. If you’re only coming to class to bolster your ego, then ACS isn’t for you, skill development isn’t for everyone.
We’re not for everyone – if you like creating characters – we do teach playwrighting and you would fit in there just great, but since character creation isn’t a necessary part of actor training, we don’t teach it. If you want to create character, you won’t enjoy ACS – we only teach the skills that are necessary to become the best actor you can be. We understand how important character creation is to you, but we’d rather you be a successful working actor.
If you give up easily – we’re probably not for you. We know that skill acquisition takes time and it can be frustrating, but we see success through struggle, but not everyone has the persistence and the strength of character to keep going when things get tough. If you give up easily, – you should probably give up now and don’t sign up.
We have a technique – and technique isn’t for everyone – actually it’s not for most. We understand that technique scares people, they think it will straightjacket them – we’re not for those people because we use technique to liberate people and make them better and not everyone wants to get better. We use technique to teach actors to cut through scripts, to work off other actors, to develop the skills necessary to be excellent – but some people are scared of learning a successful technique and those people wouldn’t enjoy our classes.
We are confident about what we teach, we are certain that it works, and some people find that level of certainty causes them uncertainty. If you prefer that your teachers admit that the tools they teach might not work for you – then we’re not for you. If you prefer your teachers to have 30 years experience, but still be unsure about how to make you good – then we are most definitely NOT for you.
We’re not for everyone, that’s okay, we’ve accepted it.
