Embracing Zoom Auditions
Embracing Zoom Auditions
I was recently part of an audition process on Zoom and the actor made a couple of references to being uncomfortable with the setup and the equipment. So I thought it would be interesting to explore that because I know a lot of actors who don’t like auditioning on Zoom.
But here’s the way to think about it. Look at how much cheaper it is for you as an actor to be able to get in front of that casting director or director using the technology. In the old days, it was a bus ticket, train ride, plane ride, and would cost you a fortune for about 5, 10, or 20 minutes maybe and then all the way back again. Now you’ve got a chance to get in front of them really easily.
From the other perspective, the directors and casting directors don’t have to find a venue, book a room, travel all the way there and pay all that expense to hold that initial audition. Sure they’re going to want to do that later, but for this first phase, being able to audition you over Zoom means that they can see more people faster. That increases your chances and probability of being seen.
So I guess my message is to really embrace the technology and if you feel uncomfortable with it, then use it more. Practice. Get special equipment. You could use a teleprompter so that when you’re auditioning on Zoom and talking to the casting director, you’re actually looking them in the eye because you’re barreling the lens.
Embrace Zoom, Teams, whatever it may be for your auditions and casting calls. It’s not going anywhere so perfect your technique and get comfortable with it.
