The Myth of Success
If you’re still sitting around waiting for it to happen, it probably won’t. They won’t call. They probably don’t even know you exist. Because if you’re still sitting around waiting, you’re not even on their map.
Did you do something today to get ON their map? Yes or No? Probably not.
Are you like the person who sits around dreaming about what you’d do with a lottery win, but never actually buys a ticket? It’s very very unlikely you will win if you DO buy a ticket, but it’s impossible if you don’t. And making art, being an actor, getting a book published – that’s a lot easier than a 14 million to 1 chance on the Lotto.
What are you waiting for? You do not need permission to be a successful working actor, so stop waiting for it. Go out there and do it. You think it happens by accident? Successful people were sitting at home and someone said ‘wanna do a play?’ People sitting around complaining about the lack of opportunities, the unfairness, the way the system is against them. After all, success only happens to the ‘lucky’, the ‘friends of the right people’, ‘people who already know people.’
Do it for yourself. You don’t need anyone’s permission. Connect with people, make a project, and as Seth Godin says “own the results.” Good or bad, you got off your ass and made it happen. Then learn from your mistakes and do it again. And again. Until they ARE calling.
Or sit at home waiting for the phone to ring…
The choice is yours.
