Knowing the Commitment

Undertaking the decision to commit yourself to become excellent in your field is more than just having a dream and following. This is as true as providing the best flooring service as it is for becoming an exceptional actor.

The starting point is to know the commitment you are making. The emphasis here is not on the ‘commitment’ but on the know. For you must understand what is involved in becoming the best.

Many people dabble and hope they get lucky. But for those that are considering becoming the best in their field, they should first truly contemplate what this involves.

It involves total commitment and you don’t stand a cat in hells chance without it.

It will involve sacrifice. It will involve putting the pursuit of excellence above self, family, friends, and many other parts of your life. It will involve planning your time: your hours, your days, your holidays, your years around this commitment.

When other go away on holiday, you pursue additional training, when others go out and get drunk, you go home early to prepare for the next day, you arrive early and you stay late and you give 100% whenever you have strength to do so.

Many people cannot give this. And that’s good, it’s reassuring because they will give in and lessen the competition.

Many times you will be alone. After formal education you may have to guide your own self-study to improve your areas of strength and remove your weaknesses. There will often be no one behind you backing you up and no one dragging you out of bed in the dim early hours.

You will overcome adversity alone. You will get out of your sick bed, you will make child care arrangements, you will budget, you will travel, you will sacrifice.

This is what it takes to take the first step on the road to excellence.

But if you know this, if you understand this, if you’ve thought this through before you begin your journey. If you understand what a commitment to excellence really means – you stand a much better chance of success.
