How to Become an Actor

Today’s blog, I thought I would give some very basic advice. People think it’s magic, like there’s a trick to becoming an actor. Once you find the trick, powwee you’re an actor. Well, it doesn’t work like that. Sure there are actors that made it by being discovered. But if you’re sitting around in your jammies waiting to be discovered, waiting to be spotted in the supermarket, or the airport, it ain’t going to happen. If it does, call me and tell me I’m wrong, but far as I know, it take GRAFT!

It will not fall in your lap.

If you are not TRAINING, or you do not have training, or you’ve grown flabby technique-wise. – then you will not become an actor.

If you do not have a HEADSHOT – then you will not become an actor.

If you haven’t built up a RESUME/CV full of EXPERIENCE, then you will not become an actor.

If you have not developed a NETWORK of OPPORTUNITIES, then you will not become an actor.

If you have not trained your BODY to be strong, fit and flexible, then you will not become an actor.

If you have not trained your VOICE to be powerful, resonant, clear and articulate, then you will not become an actor.

If you do not train your BODY and VOICE every day, then you will not become a successful working actor tomorrow by ACCIDENT!

If you do not have a SHOWREEL and an VOICEREEL – you will not become an actor.

If you don’t READ PLAYS, READ SCRIPTS, GO to the THEATRE, MOVIES, WATCH GOOD QUALITY programming on the television, then you will not become an actor

If you cannot GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY, then you will not become an actor.

If you have not had a good long LOOK at yourself and worked out WHY you haven’t succeeded thus far, then you will not become an actor.

If you have no technique, turn up late, never bring a pen, always leave early, practice as little as you can and try to get as much out for as little in, then you will not become an actor.

If you do not understand our industry, then you will not become an actor.

If you have not done these things. You will not BECOME AN ACTOR.

If you are waiting for the magic to strike, give up now, go do something else and be happy.

If you REALLY want, not just want, if you are really WILLING to put your DESIRE into ACTION, then you will look back at my list of what you have NOT done and start doing them.

That’s the only want to become an actor.
