Truthful Acting at our Glasgow Acting Studio
For those already enrolled in our acting classes in Glasgow, most of this blog will not be a surprise. However, there are still lots of people out there that have not discovered the joy of truthful acting. Most people seem to think that all techniques of acting lead to truthful acting, but of course they don’t because most are based on the belief that truth can be achieved through belief. Any system of work that is based on belief will require you to put your faith in something that is intangible. To me, this is no way to work. Truthful acting is not mere theatrical truth, the belief in imaginary things, but the ability to bring the truth of yourself within the truth of this actual moment to your performance.
I even disdain the word performance somewhat, but I use it for want of a better word. You see, I refer to truthful acting, but I’m really talking about authentic behaviour. Getting out of your own way. When this moment happens in class for the first time, when the actor gets out of their own way, stops acting and begins behaving authentically for the first time, it’s always mind blowing for us to watch.
There is no character, the truth of the scene is that it’s me and you. We stand with each other in front of the character and we have the job of convincing the audience that we’re someone else, somewhere else. That’s almost impossible. So instead, we use their inbuilt bias, their inclination to accept what they see and assist them to suspend their disbelief by not throwing them out of this belief. So it’s the audience that’s the one that comes to believe, they must have faith and that is an important part of what being an audience member is. If we behave authentically, we won’t give them a reason to lose faith. No pretend. Just truthful doing. Not pretending, but instead doing. The heart of acting is the reality of doing. Do to the other actor something like that thing the character is doing to the other character(s) and don’t hide or pretend anything, just reveal whatever happens to you as you go about this.
So, this is what we do in our acting courses in Glasgow, if you want to see for yourself, why don’t you sign up for a class? What are you waiting for? :oP
