Things I Learned from Casting a Short Film Pt.1
Recently I’ve been assisting a well known BBC television personality in casting a short film that he’s written and directing. I have been involved in casting before, but this has been particularly eye-opening and I’d very much like you to learn from the mistakes of others.
1) READ the casting call. If it seems like you haven’t read it, it’s unlikely they’ll take a punt on you being talented but stupid.
2) If it says send links, send links, they clearly don’t want their inbox full of your headshots, showreels and cv.
3) If the casting call asks for a FEMALE, Early 20s, only those that are FEMALES with an early 20s playing age should apply. Don’t apply on the ‘off chance’.
4) If it says that you must be based in a specific area, they mean it. Our casting said Glasgow/Ayrshire, I’ve received messages from Cambridge, Stockport and Devon.
5) Your playing age should be on your CV, put it on your CV, don’t make us guess, cos we’ll err on the side of conservative and bin your CV.
Part 2 will be about the casting audition itself. Watch out for it…
To You, the Best
