The Inner Game of Line Learning - An almost effortless way to learn lines

The Inner Game of Line Learning

Lots of people have great ways to learn their lines. They record, they listen, they write, they throw a ball, they walk around. All these seem to work. But they’re also a lot of hard work.

I want to introduce you to concept of line learning today. It is not a system, but it will work if you follow it. It is not really a technique, it’s more of an idea. And I use it all the time.

The idea is this. The more you try to shove the lines into your head, the harder it will be. The more you make the brain work hard, the easier it will be to learn the lines.

Line learning should be easier. The memory works well when you give it a reason to remember something. It works poorly when you use brute force. I don’t doubt the old, traditional ways work. But they aren’t very efficient.

Let’s try something fun. Read this poem and then follow my instructions below.

Between the idea

And the reality

Between the motion

And the act

Falls the Shadow

    For thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception

And the creation

Between the emotion

And the response

Falls the Shadow

   Life is very long

Between the desire

And the spasm

Between the potency

And the existence

Between the essence

And the descent

Falls the Shadow

What is the first and second word of the first line? Say it out loud.

What is the first and second word of the second word? Say it out loud.

Did you notice the word SHADOW?

Where does it come in the poem?

Well Done. You know about 70% of this poem without any effort at all.

Without trying to force the lines into your head, we’ve allowed a natural process to happen. Your brain’s curiosity and love of patterns has helped us to make a memory.

Use the same curiosity and pattern seeking to help learn something yourself. When combined with a tool like the Memory Palace, this technique is powerful AND effortless.
