Mark Westbrook is Scotland’s only full time professional acting coach, with BAFTA and Oscar winning clients. He founded ACS, fondly known as The Studio, in July 2008.
Mark is the Studio's Director and the Full Time Course Leader for the Professional Diploma in Stage and Screen Performance, a unique stage and screen acting course that he pioneered with the SQA. He teaches privately, on the advanced steps of the part-time acting course and the acting element of the full time acting course.
Mark trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Atlantic Theater Company’s Acting School in NYC, after education at the universities of Kent, Utrecht, Nottingham, Glasgow Caledonian and Glasgow. He is a qualified adult teacher, and also holds a Performance Coaching qualification from Performance Consultants International. In 2019, he will undertake a TQFE at Dundee University to add an additional teaching qualification to his experience.
He is the author of Truth in Action, The 12 Obstacles and the forthcoming SHAKESPEARE MONOLOGUE AUDITION SUCCESS.
He has directed over 20 professional productions including sell out productions at the Tron Theatre, The Arches, The Citizens Theatre, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, The Salisbury Playhouse, as well as performances across the island of Ireland and The Netherlands.
His award winning production of David Harrower’s Blackbird for Mephisto Theatre Company in Galway won the Galway Theatre Festival Award and subsequently toured Ireland. Mark also directed both a Scottish (2013) and Australian (2014) production of Stitching by Anthony Neilson, to great critical acclaim. He recently made his first short film Wonderland with Tartan Spartan Films and is shortly to go into pre-production for another. He directed his play Stain at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015.
He has taught acting since 2001 and has held lecturing posts at the universities of Glasgow, Coventry, Ulster and the Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts before setting up Acting Coach Scotland, first as a unique part-time actor training programme in Glasgow, then as a revolutionary new qualification in acting for stage and screen, a Professional 1-Year Diploma in Stage and Screen Performance, developed by ACS and certificated and quality assured by SQA as a Customised Award.
He has now directed over 20 short films and was the casting director for R Paul Wilson's award winning films The Magic Box (2014), Con Men (2015) and his latest project Isolani (2017). Mark recently worked with R Paul Wilson, as his screenplay To The Sea is produced by ConCam and Spartak Films. In 2018, To The Sea won a Judges Prize at the Scottish Short Film Festival. It was also shown at various film festivals around the world.
His former students can be found working in film, theatre and television around the world.
